3 Things You Should Know About Pickleball Balls

Hey Pickle People!

I just wanted to write a short blurb about pickle ball balls and why it is so so important to use a pickle ball ball and the right pickleball ball. I have seen time and time again people bring old wiffle balls to the courts and not enjoy the game as much as they could. I make sure to always bring extra whenever because they are relatively cheap to get and I want to make sure everyone has the best pickleball experience.

#1 The Size/Weight

Now although they may look the same as wiffle balls, most Pickleballs are much more regulated and are designed to create the most consistent play possible on whatever surface youa re playing on. A ball will affect all your shots and how the paddle reacts with the ball. Most pickleball balls fall in a certain weight range because if the ball is too light, it will get away from you all the time and it will not be a fun time, contrary, if the ball is too heavy you will most likely be hitting into the net. The same goes with the size. Some people might not think this would matter, but imagine a tennis ball that is the wrong size, you could definitely adjust after some time, but it would not be a fun time.

#2 Indoor vs. Outdoor ball

The materials and surfaces of each of the balls are a little different to cater to the different surfaces you are playing on. The outdoor balls are a little bit thicker to account for the wear and tear it will take from the tennis style courts, while the indoor ball is a little “softer” and bounces nicely on the normally wooden/composite floors. The outdoor ball also has smaller holes in the ball and is usually a little heavier, to compensate for the outdoor conditions. Obviously you could use and indoor ball outside and visa versa, but in order to keep your balls in the best condition and to have the best Pickleball experience it is imperative you use the right ball for the surface you are playing on.

#3 Never use a cracked ball

This seems obvious, but using a cracked ball is not only annoying, it can be bad for your game as a player. Firstly the uneven weight could aggravate tennis elbow or any sort of joint pain. I’ve seen it happen and it is completely avoidable. Secondly, a cracked ball will not bounce on the ground in a consistent fashion and it is really frustrating and lastly, it can mess up your swing for when you play with an actual, non-cracked ball. Trust me, you do not want to train with a cracked ball

Summary:

Make sure you are getting the right balls to make your games that much more consistent and fun. Indoor and outdoor balls also make a difference and using a regulations ball with no cracks will allow you to make your shots more consistent and you will be able improve your shots more consistently. Also, make sure to try and get the ball that is going to suite your playing area. If you only play indoor, no need to get an outdoor ball, and visa versa. Keep in mind wear and cracks on the ball will also effect play so remember to keep a couple handy when you are out playing!
