Review: Selkirk AMPED Epic X5 FiberFlex Paddle
Hey Pickle People!
Oh boy do I have a review for you!!! I just bought a Selkirk AMPED Epic X5 FiberFlex Paddle and it might be my new everyday paddle. I have heard so much about the Selkirk brand that I had to try it out for myself and I have not been disappointed. This paddle has just about everything you need to improve your game and it really gives you great control and power wherever you need it. This family owned company has been making premier paddles for years and this might be one of my favorites in terms of the feel and the play.
Head
The feel of the face of this paddle is really second to none. It feels like you have completed control over the ball while still having the power to hit kill shots from all over the court. I love the feeling when the paddle almost feels like its catching the ball and then you being able to direct the ball where ever you want it to go. The closest thing I have used to this paddle is probably the Tempest Wave Pro from Paddletek and both of them have great control, power and finesse. To me, the sweet spot on this paddle feels about average size, but the shots you can get from this spot are really quite amazing. Using this thicker X5 core is a very different feeling from a harder, thinner paddle, like the Onix Z5 but both still have great kill potential.
Handle
The one knock I have on this paddle is the grip is not as ergonomic as some of the other paddles I have use. It feels a little blocky, but nothing too big to deter you from the overall performance of the paddle. The grip tape has a nice feel and the overall build feels solid, giving you lots of confidence you can hit just about everything. Although the one I have is about 8.1 oz it does not feel heavy at all and actually my approach has felt really fast when I use this paddle even though it is heavier than a majority of my paddles.
Overall Impressions/Specs
Amazing feel in all types of shots
Great control in both long and short game
Ability to fit every playing style
Overall I really have nothing negative to say about this paddle. It really excels in every way and if you are looking for a paddle that is just an overall amazing paddle, this might be the one for you. I know this paddle is a little pricey compared to many of the others on the market, but I think it is worth every penny because of how great it performs on the court. Its power is there as well as its control and if you really love the finesse game it has that too. I honestly was extremely surprised on how good it felt when I got it and I am super excited to keep playing with this paddle for the foreseeable future.
